USB Port Colors and Their Common Meanings

USB Port Colors and Their Common Meanings

USB port colors indicate different types of ports and their speeds, but there is currently no universal, binding standard for colors.

However, colors often signal the following:

1- White or light gray: Although most common, this color often refers to USB 1.0; in some cases it is used to indicate USB 2.0, but the most widespread color for USB 2.0 is black.

2- Black: Indicates USB 2.0.

3- Blue or light blue:
Most manufacturers use blue or light blue to signal a USB 3.0 or USB 3.1 Gen 1 port.
It features data transfer speeds up to 5 Gbps (Gbps) and can be labeled as USB 3.2 Gen 1.

4- Turquoise (blue-green):
Signals USB 3.1 Gen 2 or USB 3.2 Gen 2, with transfer speeds up to 10 Gbps. It is also used to denote higher speeds, but its use remains optional and not standardized.

5- Red: Red indicates a high-power USB port (fast charging); there is no universal indication of data transfer speed. Instead, it denotes the ability to supply higher current, typically 1.5 A or 2.1 A.
• It is often used in chargers or computer motherboards to ensure fast charging even when the device is turned off. It is not standardized and may vary by manufacturer.

6- Yellow and orange: Often indicate a port that supports charging while in Sleep or Sleep and Charge mode, allowing devices to be charged even when the computer is powered off or in sleep mode. This color signaling is commonly used by ASUS and Gigabyte and has nothing to do with data transfer speeds.
